A Locksmith for Brownstones, Co-ops and Apartments
The Upper West Side runs from West 59th Street to West 110th Street, between Central Park West and the Hudson River. Its side streets are lined with brownstone and brick row houses, and Central Park West, West End Avenue and Riverside Drive are lined with large prewar apartment buildings. ALO Locksmith Manhattan works on the doors of all of them, from a late-night apartment lockout to a new intercom for a whole co-op.
Our shop is at 236 W 40th St, and our technicians cover the neighborhood 24/7, with an average response time of 15 to 30 minutes across Manhattan. You get a price before any work starts, and after-hours lockouts carry no extra call-out fee.

Common Door Problems in Upper West Side Buildings
Many buildings here are more than a hundred years old. Heavy wood doors swell in humid weather, frames move as old buildings settle, and the front door of a walk-up or co-op opens hundreds of times a day. Watch for these signs:
- A heavy prewar door that drags and no longer latches
- A mortise lock that only turns if you pull the door
- A buzzer that sounds but does not release the front door
- A key that sticks in a worn cylinder
- A lobby door closer that slams the door or leaves it open
Brownstones and the Upper West Side Historic Districts
Large parts of the neighborhood are landmark districts. The Upper West Side/Central Park West Historic District was designated in 1990, and the Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the Riverside-West End Historic District in 1989 and extended it in 2012 and 2015 (LPC report on the 2012 extension). The commission’s report notes that West End Avenue first became a street of row houses for professional families.
On these brownstone and row house doors we usually handle:
- Mortise lock repair on original wood entrance doors
- New cylinders that fit the existing door hardware
- Deadbolt upgrades on garden-level and service doors
- Rekeying after a sale, a new lease or lost keys
- Locks for areaway and side gates
Lock repairs, rekeying and new cylinders are routine. Replacing an original entrance door, or changing how it looks from the street, can need Landmarks Preservation Commission approval in a historic district, so check with the LPC before you order a new door.
Prewar Co-ops and Apartment Buildings
Along Central Park West, West End Avenue and Riverside Drive, many buildings are prewar co-ops and rentals with heavy apartment doors, mortise locks and a lobby entrance shared by dozens of households. We work with co-op boards, managing agents and supers as well as with individual owners and tenants.
Work we do in these buildings:
- Mortise lock repair and replacement on apartment doors
- Lock changes between tenants and after a sale
- Lobby door closers, hinges and electric strikes
- Mailbox lock installation and repair
- Video intercoms and keyless entry for lobbies
For a building with many doors, a master key system lets the super open every door with one key while each resident’s key opens only their own apartment.
What Your Landlord Must Put on Your Apartment Door
In New York City apartment buildings, the owner must install a key lock on each apartment entrance door and give the tenant at least one key. In a class A multiple dwelling, which covers most apartment buildings, that door also needs a heavy-duty latch set, a heavy-duty deadbolt that opens with a key from outside and a thumb turn from inside, and a chain door guard. These rules are in the NYC Housing Maintenance Code, §27-2043.
We install and fix all of it, for owners and for tenants:
- Heavy-duty deadbolts with a thumb turn inside
- Chain door guards
- Peephole installation
- Rekeying when a tenant moves out
- Duplicate keys for a new tenant
See our deadbolt replacement service for the deadbolts we install.

Upper West Side Locksmith FAQs
How much does a locksmith cost on the Upper West Side?
It depends on the job. A lockout, a rekey and a new high-security cylinder are priced differently, so call (646) 583-3320 with the address and the problem and we give you a free estimate over the phone. There is no hidden call-out fee for after-hours lockouts.
How fast can you get to the Upper West Side?
Our average response time across Manhattan is 15 to 30 minutes, and our technicians dispatch from our shop at 236 W 40th St. Traffic and the time of day change that, so we give you an arrival estimate when you call.
What locks must my landlord put on my apartment door?
Under the NYC Housing Maintenance Code (§27-2043), the owner must install a key lock on each apartment entrance door and give you at least one key. In most apartment buildings the door also needs a heavy-duty latch set, a heavy-duty deadbolt with a key outside and a thumb turn inside, and a chain door guard.
Do you work on brownstones in the historic districts?
Yes. Lock repair, rekeying and new cylinders are routine on row house doors in the Upper West Side/Central Park West and Riverside-West End Historic Districts. If you want to replace an original entrance door or change how it looks from the street, check with the Landmarks Preservation Commission first.
The buzzer in our walk-up does not open the front door. Can you fix it?
Usually, yes. We check the electric strike on the door, its power supply, the wiring and the intercom panel, then repair or replace the part that failed. If the system is past saving, we can install a video intercom such as ButterflyMX.
